James Jerome Carter

James Jerome Carter is a nationally accomplished attorney born and raised in New Orleans and founded James Carter & Associates, LLC law firm in 2000. Mr. Carter obtained his undergraduate degree from Howard University and graduated from Howard University School of Law. A civil litigation Adjunct Professor at his alma mater where he also serves on the Board of Visitors, he successfully litigates high value cases throughout the United States. He represents clients in a wide array of corporate matters. A former New Orleans City Councilman, he is presently one of seven Commissioners who serve on the board of the globally significant Port of New Orleans.

Mr. Carter is admitted to practice in all Louisiana state courts, all Louisiana United States District Courts, the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals as well as the United States Supreme Court. He is also barred in the State of Michigan.

In 2021, 2022 and 2023, he was recognized by Law Dragon 500 for excellence and leadership in the legal profession. New Orleans City Business Magazine honored Mr. Carter as a Leader in Law in 2012 and 2016. He is also the recipient of the prestigious 2022 Gertrude Rush Award from the National Bar Association. He is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, life member of the National Bar Association, and a Litigation Counsel of America Fellow, limited to less than one-half of one percent of North American lawyers, judges and scholars.

Mr. Carter served as immediate past Chairman of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors-the governing body that provides policy guidance and fiscal oversight for nine public universities in Louisiana. He participated in a multi-year study of leadership in divided communities at the University of Oxford, England-Centre for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict. He also took part in the government of France Foreign Visitors Program. Mr. Carter has lectured in England, France, Canada, Panama, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and across the United States.

He published the timely article Benefits of Having Diversity in Your Jury Practice and co-authored the book Money Matters 101: A Smart Money Guide for 18 and Beyond. Additionally, his article Transforming Policing was published in the New England Journal of Public Policy.

For his accomplishments as an attorney and public servant, Grambling State University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws, and he received a second Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of New Orleans. James Carter is married to Rene Carter, a 28-year retired educator, who was recognized in 2016 by the Louisiana Department of Education as the Middle School Principal of the Year. They have one child, Brice.
